Wu Fuzhi (1900-1977), born in Pujiang, Zhejiang Province, China, graduated from Shanghai Fine Arts School and educated in Chinese and Western painting. Early he was one of the five (the other being Pan Tianshou, Zhu Wenyun, Zhang Shuqi, and Zhang Zhenduo) who set up the White Society in Shanghai to study Chinese painting from each other and discuss views of arts.
Wu was an art educator, the Professor of the National Art School, Professor of Zhejiang Fine Arts Academy and Chair of Department of Chinese Painting who lay the foundation of art education system. He was a Chinese flower-and-bird painter who understood the essentiality of Wu Changshuo's freehand brushwork and showed his own features of living elegant, graceful posture and rich sentiment in Chinese painting. His works had a unique style that was unconventional and beyond contemporary, such as Five Kinds of Fruits, Chrysanthemums by the Fence, Inked Peonies, the Eagle, and Orchid and Bamboo. Enjoyed high reputation in China's painting circles promptly in 1930's, he was regarded as one of the founders of the flower-and-bird painting in new Zhejiang. He also wrote books as a Survey of Chinese Paintings and Ten Lectures of Chinese Paintings.
This documentary represents Wu Fuzhi's artist life and achievements and analyses the features of his poetry, calligraphy, paintings and seals.

吴茀之(1900-1977),初名士绥,改名谿,号吴谿子,浙江浦江人。早期与潘天授等创立“白社”画会,研究与弘扬中国画艺术。现代著名国画家和艺术教育家,浙江美术学院中国画系教育体系的奠基者,新浙派花鸟画的创始人之一。历任上海美专、国立艺专教授,浙江美术学院 (今中国美术学院)教授、中国画系主任,中国美术家协会浙江分会常务理事等职。
吴茀之早年毕业于上海美专,受过中西绘画的系统教育。有诗文、书法、画论等广泛的学养,功底扎实,技艺全面。后倾慕恩师吴昌硕写意花鸟,深得其真髓,能登堂人室又能脱颖而出,这与他一贯坚持勤学苦练,斟酌古今,沉潜研究,取法多方,似法不法,推陈出新的艺术创作思想和审美观分不开的。本世纪三十年代即在中国画坛享有盛誉,集诗、书、画三绝于一身。擅长意笔花鸟画,间作山水、人物,其绘画特别讲气势、重境界、求变化。艺术特点有灵、变、奇、活、重、辣、新、逸之妙。形成自己灵动飘逸,丰润郁勃,婀娜多姿,极富情趣的独特风格。刘海粟先生曾叹其为“高超妙逸”。绘画题材广泛,突破传统,超出时人,尤以画兰,“当代罕见”、“超绝无伦”。其书法遒劲飘逸,跌宕多姿,与画相得益彰。
解放后任浙江美术学院(今中国美院)教授兼国画系主任,创作和著述甚丰,有《茀之画辑》、《中国画概论》、《画论笔记》、《中国画十讲》、《画微随笔》、《吴溪吟草》、《茀之题画诗存》等行世。为现代浙派中国画首领人物,是现代浙派教学体系的奠基人之一。
