Guan Sushuang (1929- ), born in Hankou, Hubei province. She learned Beijing opera from her family when she was young. In 1943 she took Dai Qixia and Wang Yunwu as her tutors and later gave performances in Wuhan and Xinyang with her tutors. After finishing her apprenticeship, she cooperated with Gao Baisui to perform and later went to Kunming. In 1959 she was head of Kunming Beijing Opera Troupe, performing in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Wuhan, Nanjing, etc. She took Mei Lanfang as her tutor. Later she became vice-president and then president of Yunnan Beijing Opera Theatre. She is highly skilled in acting, singing and acrobatics. She can play both sheng and dan roles, and is bold in making innovations. The operas she often performs are The White Snake, Xin An Post, Yang Paifeng, The Chessboard Mountain, Marriage Predestined by a Bow, Dai Nuo, etc.
